Scholarships

The Department of  Communication offers a number of merit scholarships for exceptional students in the department. Many of these are funded by the generosity of alumni and friends of the department. All scholarships can be applied for with a common application (APPLY HERE). Details about each scholarship can be found below. Deadlines for all applications are Feb. 19, 2021.

Scholarship Info

  • Continuing students are eligible to apply for scholarships in December and January.
  • Deadline for applications is Feb. 19, 2021 for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Complete one application and the scholarship committee will ensure you are considered for all the scholarships you may be eligible.

The Beasley Scholarship

Awarded To: Available for one or more students

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be or intend to be an Electronic Media/Broadcasting major.
  • Applicant must file for financial aid. Check with Financial Aid office in Thomas Bldg. for deadline information.
  • Preference is given to candidates from Patrick County, Va.; Surry County, N.C.; and Mount Airy, N.C. Other candidates will be considered if no one from these areas qualifies.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).

Application Deadline:  Feb. 19, 2021

Application Procedure

A complete application consists of:

  • A résumé
  • At least two faculty recommendations
  • A 500- to 1,000-word essay describing in detail the experiences in your life -- whether academic or nonacademic -- which have led to your career goal and/or your intended major
  • An interview may be required

The Carol J. Hughes Memorial Scholarship for Communication

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a rising senior.
  • Applicant must be a Communication major.
  • Applicant should have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).
  • Applicant must be a must be involved in at least two ASU-sponsored extracurricular activities - one of which must be of nonacademic sponsorship.

Application Deadline: Feb. 19, 2021
Preference is given to Communication majors who have shown an interest in photojournalism.

The Charles E. Porterfield Scholarship

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a Communication major.
  • Applicant must have completed his or her sophomore year.
  • Applicant should have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicant should demonstrate financial need.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).
  • Please attach a resume with your application.

Application Deadline: Feb. 19, 2021
Preference is given to applicants involved in extracurricular activities directly or indirectly related to the area of communication arts. (ex. Debate Team, WASU Radio, The Applachian student newspaper.)

The David H. Matthews Scholarship

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a Communication major.
  • Applicant must have completed his or her sophomore year.
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).

Application Deadline: Feb. 19, 2021

The Golden & Stella Choi Scholarship

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Preference given to Journalism or Electronic Media/Broadcast majors.
  • Asian-American & international students encouraged to apply.
  • Applicant should have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Please attach a resume with your application
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).
  • Applicant must submit an essay explaining why he or she believes they are a good candidate for this scholarship and his or her career goals in the fields of electronic media/broadcasting or journalism.

The Joe S. Epley Scholarship

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a Public Relations major.
  • Applicant must have completed the sophomore year.
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicant should demonstrate financial need.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).
  • Please attach a resume with your application.

The Ryan Lee Morton Scholarship

Awarded To: One student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a Communication major focusing in EM/B.
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicant should include a brief (1 page) essay describing their interest in EM/B and in particular the production side. 
  • Applicant must be a full-time student (12 hours).
