Documenting Dutch Culture

Program Dates: May 31-June 15, 2027

Documenting Dutch Culture will provide a historical and intercultural communication context in which today’s students can explore their contemporary understanding of Northern European Culture through documentary photography. Through readings, photo critiques, class discussions, and visits to points of interest in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, students will be able to understand the impact of Dutch Culture on the rest of the world. The program starts at Schiphol Airport, where students will fly in with the program leaders from Charlotte Douglas Airport. The students will also fly back to the Charlotte Douglas Airport with the program leader.

Dr. Lynette Holman (she/her/hers) has taught at App State since 2010. While she has worked for newspapers in Missouri and Alabama, most of her professional life was spent at The Virginian-Pilot, her hometown paper in Norfolk, Virginia. She has also worked in corporate communication at Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Rosslyn, Virginia and in public relations and advertising at TateAustin (now Hahn Public) in Austin, Texas.

Program co-leader Philip Holman brings a diverse background in photojournalism, education, marketing, and visual communications to the program. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in photojournalism before beginning his career as a photojournalist for newspapers in both Virginia and Alabama.

In 2001, Philip transitioned into education, teaching in an International Baccalaureate (IB) art program in Hampton, Virginia, and later at a magnet arts school in Virginia Beach. After moving to Boone, North Carolina, in 2010, he spent 15 years as Director of Marketing at furniture manufacturer Charleston Forge. Philip currently serves as Director of Marketing at Carroll Companies, also based in Boone.

Philip has taught classes as an adjunct professor at App State in both the Department of Communication and the Commercial Photography program. A native of the UK, this will be his third time co-leading the Documenting Dutch Culture study abroad program.
