App State's student-run newspaper, The Appalachian, has been recognized with ten awards in Region 2 of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards for 2022. This summer, the top five winners will advance to the national competition. The awards are a testament to the exceptional quality of the reporting, writing, editing, photography, and design that goes into every issue of The Appalachian. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is the nation's most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging journalism's free practice and stimulating high ethical behavior standards. Region 2 of the SPJ includes North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. App State competed against many prestigious programs, including the University of Maryland, George Washington University, Virginia Commonwealth University, American University, Duke University, Howard University, and Elon University.
