App State’s Second Story Media Debuts Beyond the Table Documentary at Appalachian Theater

BOONE, N.C. — Second Story Media, Appalachian State University’s student-run communication agency, premiered an original documentary, Beyond the Table, for the local nonprofit, F.A.R.M. Cafe, along with a special community event at the Appalachian Theater, located on King Street, on Nov. 19.

Second Story Media works pro bono with nonprofit organizations throughout Boone and around western North Carolina to create meaningful campaigns and communications deliverables every semester. This semester, the team worked closely with one of Boone’s most beloved nonprofits to research, film and edit the documentary and to coordinate the public premiere event.

Second Story Media members, Arianna Bennett, Ella Marion, Kenzie Bruder, Krissie Swanger and Olivia Bell led the project, demonstrating professionalism, creativity and a commitment to community-centered storytelling.

Beyond the Table shares the story of F.A.R.M. Café’s mission to combat food insecurity in Boone and create a space where everyone is welcome, regardless of means. The documentary highlighted the café’s day-to-day impact, the people who make it possible and their community. The film serves as an updated look at the Café’s mission; its last documentary was released a decade ago.

After the screening, guests were invited to stay for a panel discussion featuring speakers from F.A.R.M. Café and Second Story Media who helped bring the project to life.
