Assistant Professor in Communication Studies

Appalachian State University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Communication Studies to begin August 2016. Candidates with extensive experience and a Master’s Degree may be considered at the rank of Lecturer. The candidate hired for this position will be responsible for coordinating on-campus public forums, discussions, and speech competitions. Special consideration will be given to applicants with an innovative vision for the place of public speaking within the liberal arts.

Duties also include maintaining a program of scholarly activity, offering courses in area of specialty, advising students, participating in departmental, university, and professional service, and potential teaching in the online undergraduate degree programs and the graduate certificate program. A terminal degree in Communication or a related field is required for tenure-track appointment. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Review of complete applications will begin October 14 and continue until the position is filled.

Assistant Professor in Public Relations

The Department of Communication at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning Aug. 1, 2016. Those with extensive experience and a Master's may be considered at the rank of Lecturer. The requirements for the tenure-track position include a terminal degree in communication or a closely related field and specialization in public relations. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the tenure-track appointment requires completion of all terminal degree requirements by Sept. 15, 2016. Successful candidates will be able to teach courses in the major, online, and in the graduate certificate program; contribute to developing the public relations curriculum; and maintain an active program of public relations scholarship. Expertise in Public Relations writing is preferred and work in social/new media strategies is helpful. Faculty members are expected to advise students and participate in department and university service activities.

The Department of Communication offers five major areas (advertising, communication studies, electronic media/broadcasting, journalism, and public relations) and an online graduate certificate in strategic communication. The department employs 35 full-time faculty members dedicated to teaching approximately 1,000 communication majors.
