Electronic Media/Broadcasting

Program of Study

Hands-on experience in the classroom. Apply what you learn by working with any one of our student-run media organizations. Create a digital media portfolio to share with potential employers.

Sound interesting? Consider the Electronic Media/Broadcasting (EM/B) major in the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University. Here you will learn the skills needed to launch your career in the electronic media/broadcast field.

The EM/B curriculum provides a well-rounded introduction to the history, principles, and practices of digital media production. Students gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the digital storytelling process – from idea development to finished work.

Opportunities for practical and applied production experience include our award-winning and student-run media outlets: 90.5 WASU-FM The App, AppTV, The Appalachian news organization, and The Peel Literature and Arts Review.

Before students graduate, they will create digital media content and an online portfolio to showcase their work.

Admission Requirements

  • A minor is required for all Communication majors.

  • If double majoring IN Communication, a minor IS required.

Computer Requirement

Many students in the Department of Communication are enrolled in at least one course that involves working with graphics, audio, or video. Students enrolled in video courses will need a computer capable of running Adobe Premier Pro.
